Acute & Chronic Neck Pain Treatment Treatment in Chiropractic-Works & Wellness Clinic

Persistent neck pain is a common problem that can have various origins, often stemming from acute injuries that turn into long-lasting discomfort. Acute neck pain typically arises from strain on joints or muscles, like when tendons and muscles are stretched or torn, or ligaments are sprained. Sudden forces, such as those experienced in car accidents or sports, often lead to these injuries. Additionally, maintaining awkward positions for extended periods, like poor sleeping postures or unfavourable work ergonomics, can also contribute to neck strains.

Fortunately, the soft tissues in the neck have a good blood supply, enabling relatively quick healing of minor injuries and providing relief within a few days or weeks. Non-surgical approaches, such as using ice, heat, stretches, rehab exercise and chiropractic treatment play a crucial role in speeding up recovery and easing pain during the healing process.

Common Symptoms of Neck Pain:

  • Sharp, stabbing pain in a specific spot

  • Tenderness in the affected area/s

  • Stiffness and tightness limiting head movement

  • Pain traveling down the shoulders or arms or between shoulder blade

Severe Symptoms of Neck Pain:

  • Tingling or numbness radiating down the upper back, shoulders, or arms

  • Difficulty gripping onto objects

  • Pain with head movement in multiple directions

  • Difficulty stabilizing the head

  • Dizziness, unsteadiness, and/or double vision

  • Loss of balance

  • Loss of bladder control

In some cases, neck injuries can persist and extend to other areas like the back, shoulders, and arms. Increasing neck pain should be further evaluated by a physician.

Causes of Neck Strains and Sprains:

Neck pain, a common symptom, can disrupt daily activities and sleep. Strains (muscle or tendon overstretched or torn) and sprains (ligament stretched or torn) can occur due to:

  • Sports injuries – sudden neck movement or collision

  • Poor posture – prolonged tilted head

  • Sleeping in a bad position – overextending the neck

  • Whiplash – sudden head jolting

  • Repetitive motions – common in certain activities

Chronic Neck Injury Causes: Chronic neck pain, lasting beyond normal healing time, often involves the cervical spine. Causes may include:

  • Cervical Degenerative Disc – wear and tear over time

  • Cervical Herniated Disc – outer layer tear, inner layer leakage

  • Cervical Osteoarthritis – facet joints wearing down

  • Cervical Spinal Stenosis – narrowing spinal canal, potential compression
