Disc Bulge

Discogenic Treatment in Chiropractic-Works & Wellness Clinic

Many clients who experience lower back pain are unaware if their pain is linked to a lower back strain or problems with one of their spinal discs. Disc bulge, also known as a slipped disc, bulging disc or disc protrusion is actually a very common injury we see at the clinic. It is an injury to the intervertebral disc and can occur in the cervical spine (neck), thoracic spine (upper and mid back) or the lumbar spine (lower back).

Common Causes of Disc Bulge:

  • Lifestyle Choices:

    • Smoking introduces toxins that hasten disc cartilage breakdown.

    • Poor diet, obesity, and lack of exercise contribute to the onset of a bulging disc.

  • Poor Posture:

    • Hunching forward, rounded shoulders, and a tilted head are signs of poor posture.

    • Habitual poor posture leads to repeated microtrauma on the spine, stressing it and compromising disc integrity.

    • Can result in muscle imbalance, increasing the risk of developing a bulging disc.

  • Age:

    • Discs in the spine, designed as shock absorbers, lose water and elasticity over time.

    • Weakening discs lead to the outer layer bulging into the spinal cavity under the body's weight.

Symptoms of Disc Bulge:

  • Numbness/ tingling or pain

  • Radiating pain.

  • Muscle spasm.

  • Sciatic nerve irritation.

Common Causes and Impact:

  • Bulging discs often result from a combination of factors, not just one isolated cause.

  • Aging is a common factor, with the outer fibrous ring weakening over time.

  • Asymptomatic symptoms may persist, emphasizing the importance of understanding causes for preventive care.

Severe Disc Herniation:

  • In serious cases, a disc bulge may herniate, causing the outer part to rupture and inner material to press on the spinal cord.

  • Comprehensive examination vital for accurate diagnosis due to symptom overlap with other spinal issues.
