That achy stiffness in your neck might be more than just a minor annoyance—it could be cervical spondylosis, also known as neck arthritis. The good news? There are effective steps you can take to relieve it.

At Chiropractic-Works and Wellness Clinic, we offer personalized care for spinal conditions, chronic pain, and more. Our comprehensive treatments include physical therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, medication, and, as a last resort, minimally invasive procedures. Our goal is to provide a supportive and comfortable environment where you are an active partner in your care.

What Is Neck Arthritis?

Your neck, made up of seven small vertebrae, supports the weight of your head—about 8 to 10 pounds—day in and day out. Over time, this wear-and-tear can lead to cervical spondylosis.

Cervical spondylosis is incredibly common; by the age of 60, nearly 90% of people show some signs of degeneration on an X-ray. It occurs as spinal disks weaken, dry out, and bulge, causing disk spaces to collapse. This degeneration can increase joint pressure, wear down protective cartilage, and in severe cases, lead to bone-on-bone contact and bone spur development.

Risk Factors and Symptoms

While aging is the most common risk factor for neck arthritis, others include:

  • Genetics

  • Occupations requiring repetitive neck movement or overhead reaching

  • Smoking

  • Depression or anxiety

  • Previous neck injuries

Most people with cervical spondylosis don’t experience symptoms. However, when symptoms do occur, they may include:

  • Neck pain and stiffness

  • Headaches

  • Grinding or popping sensations when turning the neck

  • Numbness or weakness in the hands, arms, or legs

  • Balance issues or muscle spasms in the neck and shoulders

Treatment Options

There are a variety of treatments available for cervical spondylosis, including:

  • Physical therapy: Strengthening and stretching exercises to improve mobility and reduce pain

  • Chiropractic care: Realigning the spine to promote natural healing and pain relief

  • Acupuncture: Stimulating pressure points to alleviate discomfort

  • Medications: Anti-inflammatories or muscle relaxants to reduce pain and stiffness

  • Ice, heat, and massage therapy: Providing localized relief

  • Steroid-based injections: For more severe cases, to reduce inflammation

  • Soft cervical collars: Used temporarily to rest neck muscles

Surgery is only considered when nonsurgical treatments have failed and you’re a suitable candidate.
